5 Honest Reasons Why I’ve Stayed in Thailand for 7 Years as a Filipina

I get asked this a lot. Why Thailand? Why not just stay in the Philippines? And honestly, after 7 years of living here in Bangkok, I have a lot of thoughts about that — so I decided to finally put them all in one place.

I am originally from Bukidnon, a small village in the Philippines where you can see pineapple farms everywhere you look. I moved to Manila for two years before eventually making my way to Thailand. And the difference between those two chapters of my life? Massive.

1. My Money Goes Further Here 💸

This was the first thing I noticed and honestly it still amazes me. When I was living in Manila and sending money to my mom, 5,000 pesos was just 5,000 pesos. But now that I live in Bangkok, when I send 5,000 baht — my family receives around 10,000 pesos. That is double. That is not a small difference, that is life-changing for a family back home.

For anyone who is supporting family in the Philippines from abroad, this is one of the most practical reasons to consider Thailand as a base. The exchange rate works in your favour in a way that Manila simply cannot match.

2. The Pace of Life is Actually Liveable 🌿

Manila is a lot. When I was living there, it felt like constant motion — always more work to do, always more stress, always more noise. I visited maybe two places the entire time I was there: Taal and Batangas. That was it. And partly that was because I was broke and living in a small dormitory. But it was also because Manila just does not make it easy to breathe.

Bangkok is different. The pace here lets you actually live, not just survive. I have visited so many places since moving here — Hua Hin, Pattaya, Krabi, Koh Pha-ngan. Beautiful places. Cities I would never have discovered if I had stayed in the Philippines.

And my living situation? I went from a small dormitory in Manila to my own apartment here. That upgrade alone was everything.

3. Thai People Are Quiet and Considerate 🙏

I love this about Thailand and I will not apologise for saying it. When you go to public places here, people are quiet. Considerate. They do not want to disturb you and they mean it. You can sit on the BTS train and actually read a book or listen to music without being pulled into someone else’s noise.

You can leave your things on a table at a coffee shop and walk away for a minute. You cannot do that in Manila — at least I never felt safe doing it. Here it feels normal.

That sense of peace in public spaces is something I did not even know I needed until I had it.

4. The Food — I Am Not Going Back 🍜

Okay I need to be honest here. I cook at home usually, but Thai food has genuinely taken over my heart. Khao phat mu sap, tom yum goong, pad thai — I could eat these every single day. My absolute favourite is som tam, the spicy papaya salad. If you have never tried it, please try it.

I actually went to a Filipino restaurant last month with a friend and I was not impressed. That surprised me. Maybe I need to go back to the Philippines and try really authentic local food again — the kind from the province, not a restaurant abroad. But right now? Thai food wins for me.

5. The Convenience Here is Unmatched 🚇

This one sounds small but it adds up every single day. 7-Eleven is downstairs. There is a mall within walking distance. The BTS and MRT trains run on time, almost every single time. You can travel from one end of Bangkok to the other without sitting in traffic for two hours.

On the train, people do not eat. They do not talk loudly. They let you sit in peace. As someone who values quiet, this is not a small thing — this is part of why I wake up every morning feeling okay about where I am.

A Note on the Philippines 🇵🇭

I want to be clear — I love my country. The Philippines is home and it will always be home. But when I visited my family about three or four years ago, I was genuinely shocked by the noise. Just the noise everywhere. And how hard it was to get around compared to what I am used to here.

That is not a criticism. It is just my honest observation after years of living somewhere different. Thailand changed what I am used to. And that is okay.

Final Thoughts

If you are a Filipina thinking about moving to Thailand — or just curious about what life here actually looks like — I hope this gives you a real picture. Not the highlight reel. Not the travel blogger version. Just seven years of real life from someone who started in a small village in Bukidnon and ended up building a life in Bangkok.

It has not always been easy. But I have never once regretted it.
